Another severe thunderstorm warning for West Gippsland

MUCH of West Gippsland has been put on alert ahead of a forecast severe thunderstorm with damaging winds and large hailstones expected to hit this evening.

UPDATE 8.10pm: the severe thunderstorm warning has been cancelled. The fire weather warning remains in place.

The Bureau of Meteorology has released a warning map showing areas impacted by the Westbury bushfire north east of Trafalgar may be affected by the thunderstorm, along with Warragul and most of the Baw Baw Shire.

A similar severe thunderstorm warning was issued last night but later cancelled.

Thunderstorms on Wednesday night started a number of fires in the region.

The State Emergency Service has advised people in affected areas to:

  • keep clear of fallen power lines
  • secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home
  • stay indoors if possible
  • avoid using the phone during the storm
  • if outside avoid sheltering under trees
  • listen to the radio for storm updates
  • switch off computers and electrical appliances

The Severe Fire Danger warning for West Gippsland remains in place.
