WARRAGUL area residents surrendered 58 illegal or unwanted weapons to police during a two month state-wide amnesty, the fourth highest count for any area in Victoria.

Warragul’s surrendered weapon count ranks behind Frankson, 65, Warrnambool, 87, and Bendigo, 164, but ahead of Ringwood, Rosebud and Shepparton, all 55.

The amnesty ran across Victoria from 1 October to 30 November, seeing a total of 2,450 weapons surrendered.

Weapons handed in to police included homemade handguns, daggers, high-powered rifles, machetes and double-edged knives.

Surrendered weapons will be destroyed.
