Four West Gippsland schools have been awarded grants of up to $50,000 under the Federal Government’s Solar Schools Program.

Chairo Christian School in Drouin, Thorpdale Primary School and Noojee Primary School will each receive a $50,000 grant for solar and rainwater tank projects at the schools, while Longwarry Primary School will receive $43,677.

Documents released by the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency show that Chairo, Thorpdale and Noojee are among 108 schools in the country receiving the maximum grant amount in the 2011-2012 program.

The funding allows schools to install solar and other renewable power systems, solar hot water systems, rainwater tanks, energy efficient lighting, skylights, ceiling fans, sensors, shade awnings, automatic doors, and double glazing.

Principal of the Noojee Primary School Ronald Gilchrist said in a Baw Baw Shire media release today the solar power will reduce school operating costs.

“The connection of solar power to our school will greatly assist in reducing our energy costs which in turn will allow finances to be spent in other areas,” Mr. Gilchrist said.
