NATIVE plants will replace those removed from the Victoria Street median strip as part of an attempt by the Baw Baw Shire Council to reduce servicing requirements.

The council started work on the strip in January and Baw Baw Shire Council CEO Helen Anstis said the old garden and grass pattern was high maintenance.

“The works… have been part of a plan to reduce the servicing required for this stretch of gardens,” Ms Anstis said.

“The maintenance and traffic management in this area is quite difficult due to the layout of the gardens, so they are being changed to be either complete grass or complete garden rather than grass, garden, grass, garden.”

“[Exotics] have been removed and will be replaced with natives which will reduce the time required to maintain this area.”

  1. Laurie Bell says:

The council(s) could start by removing all trees (as seen in photo) and replacing with bushes to slow down any car entering the median. This may reduce deaths and injuries on the roads. And if that means using “exotic” bushes, then better that than endangering drivers.

  2. Lorris Jones says:

Why would you need to use “exotic” plants just to find something bush like? Plenty of natives fit this criteria as well.

  3. Jack O Dwyer says:

The headline sounded a bit racist.
    read it again.

Thank you for pointing that out, Jack. I’ve made it clearer that it is referring to native plants now.
