The West Gippsland Arts Centre has had 20 new solar panels added to its array, but will not generate any additional electricity until other infrastructure is upgraded.

A spokesperson for the Baw Baw Shire Council today told The Warragul Citizen that upgrades to the electricity meter are required before the new panels can be commissioned.

The upgrades should be taking place in the next month.

Once operational, the new panels will add 5 kilowatts to the existing 10 kilowatt system, allowing the building to generate 60 kilowatts of energy per day.

The upgraded system will cater for eight per cent of the Arts Centre’s power demands.

The panels were funded by both the Baw Baw Shire Council and a Victorian Local Sustainability Accord Grant from the Department of Sustainability and Environment.

The original set of solar panels were installed in July this year.
