The strategy sets out how the council will improve wellbeing for older community members through development of age-friendly policies, services and structures.

Revisions to the strategy incorporated feedback from 62 community members and groups.

Drouin ward councillor Terry Williamson spoke to the adoption motion at Wednesday’s council meeting. He compared the strategy to policies and reports on children recently adopted by the council.

“This is the other end of the kinder debate,” he said.

“The start of life and approaching the end of life needs a lot of thought, especially in our shire. [This report] goes right down to nuts and bolts, safety.

“Times change and we have to be able to move with it. Positive ageing deserves the attention we as a council give it.”

It is important that older members of the community have a welcoming facility in their area that is run Democratic manner without fear and favour by and for its members, unlike some existing local facilities, which are well under utilized and dominated by a few well meaning persons

Well, that all sounds well and good, but what exactly will you be doing for us elderly people. Forexampel we can no longer walk safely on Waterloo road in Yarragon, due to the increased heave duty traffic on the road, no pavement or safe place for us to walk, hence we can’t leave our home even for a walk.
