Baw Baw Shire councillors have approved the Palmerston Street Streetscape Improvements Plan, which will see a corner of the intersection of Palmerston and Victoria streets in Warragul redesigned.

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the project at last night’s council meeting, with Warragul Ward councillor Julie Grant saying the project is a small step in the larger Warragul Town Centre Masterplan project.

“This piece of work is getting a start on the Warragul Town Centre Masterplan [and] has been proposed as something we can do in the interim that is not too expensive,” Cr Grant said.

The project, which will cost $15,000 and is funded through the council’s 2011/12 operating budget, will see new trees planted, new seating and benches and planter boxes built, and maintenance of present facilities carried out including improvements to drainage.

The council plans to consult with neighbouring land owners and the Warragul Business Group prior to commencing work.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of June.
