The Baw Baw Shire Council has been awarded a Federal Government grant of $170,000 for the development of an asbestos education program.

The money, granted from the Asbestos Innovation Fund, will be awarded to the shire over a 30 month timeframe to fund development of a domestic awareness and training program for home renovators, workers in the waste and building industries, and local government professionals.

The shire will be among the first recipients of money from the fund, which was established in 2010 to raise awareness of the risks posed by asbestos and to find new treatments for sufferers of asbestos-related illnesses.
