IN a bid to improve safety standards for local skaters, the Baw Baw Shire Council will soon upgrade facilities at the Trafalgar Skate Park.

The council will inject $45,500 into the upgrade, which was announced earlier this month.

The project will see a reinforced wall of concrete replacing the existing timber wall along the park’s western boundary, separating it from the neighbouring premises.

Baw Baw Shire mayor Murray Cook said in a media release the council’s main concern was reducing both the risk and number of injuries.

“We want to make sure that skate facilities throughout the shire remain at a high standard, with the risk of injury to users minimised,” he said.

Mr Cook said the upgrade would stop trespassers leaping easily from the wall onto a neighbouring roof, a problem with current park facilities.

The new design “will prevent this risky behaviour from happening and also act as an effective sound barrier,” he said.

The project is due to be completed in late May.
