The race is on at Warragul’s latest infrastructure redevelopment.
Warragul’s newly redesigned BMX track in Western Park was officially opened by Baw Baw Shire Mayor Diane Blackwood today, giving a new home to the Warragul Wyld dogs and a competitive edge to local aspiring BMX champions.

Because there are some jumps here that aren’t anywhere else and that’s going to give them something different to try on, practice on, jump and all the rest; which is what we need in the state at the moment.
The new track replaces the old track on the same site, which was smaller and had to be altered to accommodate the Warragul – Drouin two towns trail.
Councillor Blackwood said that the new track would boost the number of locals participating in BMX racing.

For the 20 members that are currently here it will give them a great lift and hopefully some new members will come along and want to join in the fun.
Winner of the day’s pro race and professional rider TOM SIINMAA, who started riding ten years ago at Western park, is also enthusiastic about what the track means for the area.

This is where it all started for me and it’s good to see it sort of get a revamp into something totally new that’s going to help the club out in the long run
Former BMX world junior champion ASHLEY MCCUTCHEON helped to design the new track, making sure that there was something for every ability level.

You just sorta have to make it a little bit technical so it’s challenging riders so they wanna ride, challenge…yeah, to step up a bit. There’s a few technical straights along the track and some smaller stuff for the kids. So yeah, a little bit of everything!
And the younger riders seem to agree.

The project cost 170, 000 dollars, not the planned 150, 00, with the extra 20, 000 being borrowed from excess from other projects. The Baw Baw Shire’s encouraging everyone to come and try the bike track; just remember your helmet. William Kulich for the Warragul Citizen.
