DATA FROM the 2011 Australian Census released yesterday shows the predicted increase in the Baw Baw Shire’s population since 2006 was higher than the actual increase.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) forecast Baw Baw’s population to reach 42,921 people in 2010, but by 2011 had only reached 42,864 people.
The estimated increase in population between 2009 and 2010 was almost 1,600 people, and an upward trend in predicted increases suggests over 1,600 people were predicted to arrive between 2010 and 2011.
The data shows little change in Baw Baw’s age demographics.

The Census data also confirms the population of Drouin is increasing almost twice as fast as that of Warragul, rising by 2,163 people in comparison to Warragul’s 1,131.
Warragul’s population at the time of the Census was 14,074 people, while Drouin’s was 9,686.
