Council slashes Drouin Pool hours to combat ‘antisocial behaviour’

The Baw Baw Shire Council has slashed the opening hours of the Drouin Outdoor Pool and suggested possible permanent opening hours changes to combat antisocial behaviour at the facility.

A Baw Baw Shire Council Facebook update yesterday stated the pool will only be open between 6.30 and 7.30AM three days a week as the council consults with Police, the YMCA and the Manager of the council’s leisure facilities to “find a long term solution to combating antisocial behaviour at the Drouin pool.”

“For the moment, the pool is still open for early morning swims Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6.30am and 7.30am but will be closed until further notice for all other times,” the update said.

A spokesperson for the council yesterday told The Warragul Citizen behaviour including abuse of staff, swearing, fighting between patrons, smoking, “hoon” and dangerous behaviour was upsetting the community and putting people at risk.

The spokesperson said the offenders were mostly between 12 and 25 years of age.

A move as drastic as a permanent change to the pool’s hours is on the cards.

“If it becomes apparent that the safety of pool patrons and staff cannot be guaranteed, the council will need to consider alternative operating times and security arrangements,” the update said.

The council is encouraging the public to present ideas to resolve the issues.

  1. Alex says:

so we have 3 hours per week…

I wonder how much per hour cost maintenance of the pool and mortgage of the land and building?

    $10000?

Anyway tt does not matter for Baw-Baw council, they are very generous with ratepayers money.
