A debate to be held in Warragul next week will seek to raise awareness about homelessness.

Hosted by comedian Rod Quantock, The Great Debate: Only the Hopeless are Homeless? will discuss all forms of homelessness, from living on streets to crisis housing and couch surfing.

The debate will also investigate how people become homeless.

Baw Baw Shire Mayor Diane Blackwood said in a media release the debate is important for everyone to attend.

“If you’re thinking that you can’t come to the debate because you’ll miss Gruen Planet or Puberty Blues, consider the fact that you have a television, a home, somewhere comfortable, safe and secure for you and your family,” Cr Blackwood said.

“Record your television shows. Come to the debate. It’s free, it’ll be fun, and it’ll also be informative.”

Debate organisers recently received knitted blankets, scarves and beanies from the Nickleby Nutty Knitters Team to give to homeless people.

“Inevitably, despite our very best intentions as a community and a Council, there will always be people who fall through the gaps,” Cr Blackwood said.

“The work these services do is remarkable and remarkably important. They provide a safety net for our most vulnerable citizens.

“The Only the Hopeless are Homeless? debate will be a great opportunity to learn more about these services, the problems they help people deal with and maybe even ways to get involved yourself.”

The debate will be held at 7pm, Wednesday September 5 at the West Gippsland Arts Centre.
