Fines forgiven at Baw Baw libraries this month

Do you have overdue library books, CDs, or DVDs? Now’s your chance to return them without a fine! West Gippsland Libraries is forgiving outstanding fees for all items returned this month.

The so-called amnesty is designed to encourage lapsed members to return to the library and use its services again.

A library spokesperson told the Baw Baw Citizen the average overdue time is only two weeks, and membership privileges are only revoked when fines reach $10.

“The aim of the amnesty isn’t to address an issue of non-returns, it’s being introduced to encourage members who have incurred a fee for non-returned or overdue items, and as a result been hesitant to visit the library, to visit us again,” the spokesperson said.

“The maximum an adult member can ‘owe’ us before their membership privileges are suspended is $10.00, however the fines can continue to accumulate after they reach that point, so we are potentially forgiving much more than that (in rare cases). We also do not fine children.”

Kids are exempt from fees.
