Police and the CFA are investigating a fire which gutted a Smith Street house this morning.

Fire crews from Warragul and Drouin were called to the blaze at 77 Smith Street shortly after 1am to find the building at risk of collapse.

A ladder platform crew from Dandenong had to be called to allow firefighters to extinguish the fire.

Incident Controller Lieutenant Steve Venville says the fire badly damaged the house.

“We were able to stop the spread of fire fairly quickly, but nonetheless the entire house was extensively damaged by fire and smoke,” Lt Venville said.

The house is advertised for lease and had no occupants at the time of the fire.
