NEERIM SOUTH will host a new arts festival in October with the goal of bringing locals and tourists together to celebrate the region’s art, music and culture.

The inaugural Neerim Bower Arts Festival will take place on Sunday 26 October at the Neerim South Recreation Reserve.

Funding for the festival came through a $350,000 Small Town Transformations grant from Regional Arts Victoria.

Event organisers have promised a “battle of the bands” concert featuring high school students will take place at the festival, as well as a food and wine market, activities for children and a performance from a 30-piece band of local musicians.

Organisers have also listed the planned Neerim Bower sculpture, funded by the same grant as the festival, as an attraction for outsiders visiting the event. The sculpture will be erected later this year.

A number of art classes will take place in the lead up to the festival, including ceramics, junkyard sculpture, mosaics, environmental art and linocut workshops.

Neerim South was one of five towns to receive funding last year through the Small Town Transformations program, which funds significant artistic projects in regional areas.

Projects in Neerim South funded by the grant were centred around the satin bower bird, a species native to the area.
