THE VICTORIAN Government has pledged $221,000 toward the construction of a new multipurpose community centre on the St Mary’s parish church grounds in Trafalgar.
The building will adjoin the existing hall in the $295,000 development.
Deputy premier and minister for regional and rural development Peter Ryan said in a media release the church will be used by schools and community groups.
“The centre will include a meeting room, kitchen, toilets and outdoor recreation areas with new paths and improved landscaping,” Mr Ryan said.
“It will link the existing hall and church for the first time, but have a separate entrance to allow access when the church is locked.
“A range of community groups, as well as nearby primary and secondary schools, are anticipated to use the centre for their activities, including the Mainly Music preschool program, JAFFAS after school care program, a monthly men’s breakfast and the Trafalgar Community Development Association.”
Narracan MP Gary Blackwood said community fundraising had been strong.
“The Anglican Trusts Corporation of the Diocese of Gippsland will provide $15,000 towards the project, with the Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal to contribute $4,450 for the fit-out of the kitchen,”Mr Blackwood said.
“There is strong support within the community, with $49,000 donated through fundraising efforts and a further $5000 provided in-kind.”
