Warragul’s new outdoor pool will cost $400,000 more than predicted in council documents which led to the decision to approve the project.

Baw Baw Shire councillors decided at Wednesday’s council meeting to approve an option outlined in the meeting’s agenda which would see a new outdoor pool constructed in Warragul and the present indoor pool upgraded at a cost of $13.76 million.

The project is now set to cost $14.16 million.

Director of Compliance and Corporate Services for the Baw Baw Shire Tim Frederico told The Warragul Citizen the cost increase is due to a change in the pool’s planned size.

“The $13.76 million was based on an eight lane outdoor pool,” Mr Frederico said.

“The 10 lane outdoor pool added an extra cost of approximately $400,000, hence the amended figure.”

Mayor of the Baw Baw Shire Council councillor Diane Blackwood said in a media release today a sizable pool is needed to relieve pressure on present infrastructure.

“Statistics show that the indoor pools are at capacity,” Cr Blackwood said.

But Warragul Ward councillor Julie Grant said at Wednesday’s meeting the demand for outdoor pools is in decline.

“It is absolutely undeniable that outdoor [pools] are less in demand,” Cr Grant said.
