Keen for a West Gippsland Arts Centre revamp update? This is a big one. Literally!

Works on the centre’s upgrade met a “major milestone” on Monday with the lifting of new structural framework into place.

Images released by the Baw Baw Shire Council (above and below) show the significance of what went down… or, rather, up! A massive crane is seen lifting steel framework pieces into place across the entire short end of the theatre.

The lifting project was so large Civic Place had to be closed so the crane would have space to operate.

“After the first few months, where most of the work has involved demolition and underpinning, it’s great to see some major construction milestones being completed,” Baw Baw mayor Joe Gauci said in a media release.

“The massive steel structure being installed today will form the base for the two new floors which will overlook Civic Park and provide audience access to the new balcony seating.

“The original building was a steel framed structure, clad in bricks, so the wall of the building has had to be stripped so that the new steel can be fixed to the existing framework.”

A council spokesperson added that the renewal project is on track for completion in mid-2018, despite recent interruptions caused by rain.
