The Baw Baw Shire Council has begun issuing fire prevention notices to owners of poorly maintained properties to remind them to prepare for this year’s fire season.
490 notices have already been issued this year.

The notices are issued under the Country Fire Authority Act and require that residents remove fire hazards on their property.
Recent weather conditions have led to increased vegetation growth and the council today warned in a media release that that the fire risk “will be substantial, especially in relation to grass fires.”
At the Warragul Fire Brigade Open Day last month, Volunteer firefighter Mark Gallagher emphasised the importance of having a fire plan.
“[It is important that everyone has] a fire plan, put it into action (sic) well before the fire comes. If they don’t want to stay there then get out the day before. If it’s a bad fire day that’s what I’d be doing. Or just go to your safe area,” Mr Gallagher said.
