BAW Baw mayor Murray Cook has been presented with an award by the Municipal Association of Victoria in recognition of his service as mayor.
Cr Cook received the Mayor Emeritus Award, which is presented to councillors who have served three or more terms as mayor, at the MAV Annual Conference dinner last week.

Cr Cook has been mayor of Baw Baw for the past two years, and was mayor of Narracan shire for a year in the early 1990’s.
He has told the Warragul & Baw Baw Citizen he will not contest at the mayoral elections due to be held next month.
North ward councillor Debbie Brown likely to take his place.
“This award recognises Cr Cook’s role as Mayor of Baw Baw Shire and the former Shire of Narracan,” Baw Baw CEO Helen Anstis said in a media statement.

“Of course, it also acknowledges that Cr Cook has been a very active member of our community for a long time, and that being so active takes a great deal of family support.
“It was fabulous to see Cr Cook joined by his wife Tini in receiving this award.”

In mid-2012 I was complaining that the incumbent Council prioritised non-essential works over roads and drainage and, at the same time, had the gall to impose an outrageous 11% rate rise. I have not forgotten the public anger expressed at that rowdy Public Meeting on 28 May 2012. Two and a half years up the track I am a great deal happier with my current representatives’ handling of works, rates and the Shire’s administrative staff. While nothing’s perfect and there’s always more to do, I commend Murray Cook as an excellent mayor: visible, articulate, across the issues and leading “from the front” as good leaders should. Keep up the good work Councillors. Thank you, Murray, you deserve your Award.
