OVER 4,000 cyclists will descend on Baw Baw next Thursday and Friday as part of the Great Victorian Bike Ride.

An overnight stop at Yarragon and a break at Seaview are planned as part of this year’s ride.

The Baw Baw Shire Council will suspend footpath trading laws throughout the shire on the days in an attempt to capitalise on the large number of tourists.

The decision to suspend the laws was made by the previous council in June, along with a decision to close Yarragon’s service road between Campbell and Loch Streets on Thursday.

In moving the motion Mount Worth ward Councillor Bill Harrington said the event was a great opportunity for Yarragon.

“The majority they (GVBR management) expect to stay fairly close to Yarragon (sic) as they do need to get their rest that night,” Cr Harrington said.

The motion saw the suspension of footpath trading laws from 6am Thursday to 11.59pm Friday.

Then-Warragul ward Councillor Tony Wolfe amended the motion to make the suspension apply throughout Baw Baw.

“Possibly 5,000, maybe 6,000 (maximum figures given at the time) cyclists descending on Yarragon in one hit, I’m not sure how they’re going to congregate… some may spill over to Trafalgar and [other towns],” Cr Wolfe said.

A market featuring live music, art projects and musical performances will be held in Yarragon on Thursday night.
