IT IS unclear when Gippsland rail services will return to normal after fire damage forced the closure of the line east of Moe.

The damage was caused by a fire in the Hernes Oak area over the weekend.

Many trains ran normal services yesterday between Moe and Southern Cross Station but buses replaced trains for stops east of Moe and some loco-hauled services were cancelled altogether.

It remains unclear when services will return to normal.

“V/Line track inspection crews have begun assessing fire damage to railway track and signalling infrastructure,” a spokesperson for the regional rail operator said in a media release.

“Once the extent of damage is known, V/Line will let customers know when repairs can be completed for trains to resume east of Moe.”

V/Line has advised passengers to allow extra travel time where bus replacements are in operation.
