LABOR EASTERN Victoria MP Matt Viney has announced he will retire at the next election after suffering a mild stroke last month.

Labor leader Daniel Andrews said the Mr Viney, who serves as Labor’s deputy president in the Legislative Council, made the decision to leave for health reasons.
“Yesterday Labor’s deputy president in the Legislative Council, Matt Viney, advised me that he would not be recontesting the next state election,” Mr Andrews said.
“Matt’s recovery continues, but he has advised me that he wants to put his health first.
“On behalf of the parliamentary Labor party I would like to thank Matt for his service to the Parliament, his community and the Labor Party.”

Mr Viney is not expected to return to parliament until next month.
“Matt is currently receiving hospital treatment and this will continue for some time. His physicians have advised him that he will be able to return to parliament in early December,” Mr Andrews said in October.
Mr Viney has represented the electorate since 1999 and is one of three Labor MPs to announce their retirement in the last week, including former Trafalgar High School student and Treasurer of Victoria John Lenders.
