The Baw Baw Shire Council has advised the roads are closed to through traffic and suggests motorists use Darnum-Shady Creek Road as a detour route.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology says 48mm of rain has fallen in the area in the last 24 hours.

North Canal Road is closed at its intersection with Yarragon-Shady Creek Road, which was identified as an area of frequent flooding in the 2011 Drainage Review.

The report says “undersized pipes, insufficient pit capturing capacity, tree roots blocking the flow, and inadequate [and irregular] maintenance” has led to flooding.

Baw Baw Shire Council Mayor Diane Blackwood said maintenance has been delayed by bad weather.

“Along with everyone else, we are praying for a break in the weather so that our roads are not continuously inundated with water and we can carry out our planned road works,” Cr Blackwood said.
